About the program

Choose from five majors – Analytical Chemistry, Biology, Earth Science, Mathematics and Physics – and a wide range of electives, including subjects from Charles Sturt’s dedicated interdisciplinary areas: natural resources resilience and productivity; data, digital and spatial science; and animal and plant biosecurity.

The Bachelor of Science from Charles Sturt University gives you the freedom to explore the diversity of natural and physical sciences. You can gain a broad foundational knowledge, specialise in a particular scientific field or construct a unique study program to suit your interests, including choosing electives from other disciplines across the university.

Studying science online gives you the flexibility to study your way – with opportunities to get hands-on experience during on-campus residential schools. You could also select some on-campus subjects, and gain authentic practical experience in our world-class facilities. For example, you could get hands-on at the National Life Sciences Hub, a contemporary research, learning and teaching complex established at Charles Sturt University’s Wagga Wagga campus and staffed by leading scientists and researchers. Facilities include student teaching laboratories, collaborative research areas, controlled-environmental facilities, a glasshouse complex and quarantine-approved research areas.

This course is the ideal foundation for further study. You could undertake an Honours year to get a taste of research, move into more specialised postgraduate studies in areas such as ornithology, environmental management, fish conservation or GIS. And who knows, maybe you’ll go on to a PhD to discover new knowledge. If you’re interested in teaching, the Bachelor of Science also provides a pathway to pursue further study at Charles Sturt to become a secondary school science and/or mathematics teacher.

Career opportunities

  • A wealth of science careers are possible – that could take you anywhere in the world. Work across Australia, collaborate with international peers – or relocate overseas to broaden your professional opportunities.
  • Choose where you will make a difference. You could pursue a career in education, research, government or industry. Wherever you decide to take your scientific knowledge, you’ll be ready to apply it and make a real impact.
  • Become a secondary science teacher with further study. The Bachelor of Science gives you the opportunity to complete the science subjects required for teaching accreditation. Across Australia there is a high demand for teachers qualified to teach secondary chemistry, mathematics and physics.
